When my mother died I started to reflect on those moments in my life that she filled my life with happiness. What came to my mind was, my mother worked many hours in the week, once in a while she will come home early, in those occasions I will get out of the bus entered my house I will see her purse at the entrance of the house hallway. My whole self will be filled with the most extra ordinary sense of joy. The purse then became the object for communicating emotions in my work.
Having grown up in a tied niche immigrant community marked a strong sense of need for belonging. Once I left and moved to United State my journey was marked by the constant search for community. When you are part of a community you have time and proximity to observe and verify the different narrative of the community members. Women narrative if observed in detail are reflected in the purses that they tend to carry, a voice.
Initially my purse series concentrated in the member’s narrative of my immigrant community. Voices that reflect sense of lost of the past, a sense of adjustment to a new continent and a sense of belonging to every day life in the tropics. As the series progresses I have started to introduce voices from other communities that I have belonged in my own immigrant journey.
The purse is the microphone to our individual and collective voices.
